Emotional management for people with type 1 diabetes is an essential part of taking care of yourself. We’re not taught this in school, even though managing our emotions is a foundational skill that affects every other part of life, including diabetes management.
Jessie and I talk about several things in this episode:
- What emotional management is
- Managing emotions vs. controlling emotions
- Why it’s important for people with type 1 diabetes to learn emotional management
- Strategies for managing emotions
- Examples when it can come in handy
- Some grounding exercises
Wins & Fails
Jessie’s Win: Jessie has been staying on top of her homework and learning when to stop for the day, since working from home (schooling from home) means the time all bleeds together.
Colleen’s Fail: I had what was probably an emotionally driven high blood sugar while watching Avengers Endgame. After dipping low several times, the last Smartie roll I had sent me over 175 and I stayed there for a few hours.
Tip of the Week
Write down your goals (diabetes-related or otherwise) and put them someplace highly visible, like on your wall or as your computer/phone background.
Diabetes Spotlight
The spotlight this week is on the Veteran’s Association. Veterans can now get Dexcom’s G6 CGM at VA pharmacies.
“Until now, veterans’ G6 CGM prescriptions were filled through the Durable Medical Equipment channel, and it often took veterans two to six weeks to get their CGM. Now, veterans with diabetes will be able to pick up their CGM from the pharmacy in two to three days.” (diaTribe)
Now It's Your Turn...
How often have you felt like your emotions are out of control when it comes to your diabetes? Do you have any success stories?
