Ever wonder how to approach educating your parents about your type 1 diabetes? Jessie & I talk about what we want our parents to know. There’s a big difference between parenting a child with type 1 and being that child experiencing the day-to-day realities of it.
Jessie and I share some broad thoughts on what we wish our parents had known when we were younger diabetics, and things that you can start talking to your parents about right now…
Or, if you’re the parent listening to this episode… YAY! This is the stuff you should know right now instead of later.
Educating parents about type 1 diabetes is something doctors AND type 1 diabetics should undertake.
Wins & Fails
Colleen’s Win: My A1c is now 5%, and my new lowest weight is 158.4 lb! I’ve finished my elimination diet and started bringing in more combinations of different food groups.
Jessie’s Fail: Jessie stuck to her guns in a peer pressure situation where other high school seniors were taking off their masks for group pictures, and Jessie refused to take hers off. She considers this a fail because there was a missed opportunity for educating one of her peers on type 1 diabetes and that wearing a mask is Jessie’s choice. You’ll have to listen for the whole story!
Tip of the Week
If you don’t have auto-ship set up with your suppliers and pharmacy, set reminders in your calendar or a reminder app.
Diabetes Spotlight
The spotlight this week is on a phone app called Happy Bob. Happy Bob connects to your CGM and turns diabetes management into rewarding and positive experiences.
Their mission:
We want to help people with diabetes to succeed in daily diabetes care by providing positive and rewarding experiences for managing their own health. We do this by combining gamification, machine learning and real-time, personal health data available through sensors and wearables, creating a rewarding loop that turns diabetes management into opportunities of fun moments and better health.
Happy Bob is really more for entertainment value and should not be used to make treatment decisions.
It’s seriously good entertainment value!
